Match 29

Milton Keynes (home)

EXETER CITY 1 MILTON KEYNES DONS 1 ATTENDANCE: 4,544

It was only a matter of just over seven
months ago that Milton Keynes Dons were last at St James' Park, and being a relatively new club, games between the Grecians and our visitors have been very few.

So we'll have a look at the last occasion that the Dons were here at St James' Park when the teams drew 1-1, courtesy of Anthony Moxey whose report appeared on the club's official website.

MK Dons enjoyed the upper hand in the opening exchanges. But having weathered the initial storm City then began to find their passing game and range and began to make inroads on the MK goal.

City took the lead in the 7th minute when there appeared to be no danger from an innocuous ball into Cureton in the corner of the box.

The striker had other ideas though, by turning sharply and chipping the ball towards the opposite top corner of the net and just inside the angle of post and bar to give City a 1-0 lead.

Other than MK grazing the post with a shot across Jones towards the far corner when it seemed easier to score, that was pretty much it for the remainder of the half as both sides struggled to string a meaningful number of passes together and insisted on giving the ball away cheaply with frustrating regularity.

That was until the 40th minute when Golbourne robbed a lumbering defender and strode into the box with authority, however his blistering shot cleared the bar by the merest fraction to end up in the small, but enthusiastic, band of MK supporters behind the goal.

With everyone looking forward to a warming half time cuppa, MK weren't quite finished yet as a forward set off on a mazy run through the entire City midfield and defence before squaring inside the box to a team mate whose near post drive looked to be heading into the bottom corner until Taylor slid in to clear the ball to safety.

In the 65th minute Cureton sent a hanging cross to O'Flynn eight yards out, but under severe pressure from a couple of defenders he couldn't get either the power or direction necessary to trouble the keeper.

A couple of minutes later, with MK looking stronger and stronger, they almost levelled but Jones was equal to the effort producing a smart stop at his near post from close range after a superb turn and smash from an MK forward.

O'Flynn was through on goal in the 70th minute with only the keeper to beat, he nonchalantly stroked the ball past the out rushing keeper but agonisingly millimetres the wrong side of the far post when a second goal looked a certainty.

A minute later MK Dons drew level.

A minute later MK Dons drew level. Within seconds of coming on Ibhere had levelled things up. Fellow substitute Chadwick was given the freedom of City's right hand side to fly down unmolested before firing in a cross to the unmarked Ibhere who rose unchallenged to guide a downward header past Jones.

For the remaining 15 or so minutes the two teams exchanged possession wastefully before Cozic found space enough for a run and shot from distance that the keeper saved comfortably.

Then with the last action of the game deep into stoppage time Harley blasted a free kick from inches outside the box straight at the wall after O'Flynn was unceremoniously dumped to the turf trying to wriggle through a couple of MK defenders.
