Exeter dropped into the relegation zone as two goals from Saido Berahino gave Brentford a comfortable victory.
Berahino, on loan from West Brom, lashed home a bobbling ball from close range after Jake Bidwell's free-kick had not been properly cleared.
Exeter captain David Noble was shown a red card for elbowing Harlee Dean.
The visitors' best chance fell to Jamie Cureton but his shot was saved by Simon Moore and Berahino sealed the victory when he headed in Adam Forshaw's cross.
