Biographical Text

Dunlop made the long journey south to join Exeter City in June 1950, having previously played for Dunfermline Athletic.

He was called into the first team to make his debut for the Grecians in the second match of the season against Bristol City at Ashton Gate, and retained his place in the side for the three subsequent matches.

However, that was all he did play, his time was otherwise spent in the reserves.

Released after one season at St James’ Park, Dunlop remained in Devon and signed for Ilfracombe Town.

Bristol Rovers gave him a chance to play at league level again when they signed him in May 1952, but he never made the first team.

Dunlop had better luck on his move to Bradford Park Avenue in May 1953 as he went on to score 12 goals in 36 league matches.

He moved again in October 1954 to Darlington, where he stayed until the end of that season, scoring two goals in 18 matches.

Returning to Devon once more, Dunlop signed for Bideford in the summer of 1955 and then moved on to Exmouth Town in June 1957.

By 1962-63 Dunlop was playing in Exeter for former Grecian ‘Frank Houghton’s Old Stars’.

William died on the 8th August 1994.
