1st round.

Yeovil 1 Exeter City 3

Winless in their opening four games and fresh from a 3-0 loss at Leyton Orient City needed a shot in the arm when they travelled to Huish Park in late August.

Richard Logan had replaced Jamie Cureton three days earlier but the pair lined up together from the off and the latter opened from Harley's raking pass. Sam Williams saw red for the home side shortly before half-time but they drew level on 76 minutes. But just seconds later Cureton sent City back into the lead and a place in Round Two was rubber-stamped when Harley curled home a beautiful free-kick. The feel-good factor had returned City wouldn't lose for another six games including a fine 1-0 win over Charlton four days later.

BBC match report –

Jamie Cureton opened his account for Exeter with two goals to beat 10-man Yeovil in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

The striker beat Adam Virgo to a long ball before firing past John Sullivan to put the Grecians ahead.

Yeovil's Sam Williams was then sent off for headbutting Troy Archibald-Henville but they equalised when Andrew Welsh fired past Paul Jones.

However, Exeter hit back when Cureton turned home Jake Thomson's cross before Ryan Harley floated in a free-kick.

Yeovil Town boss Terry Skiverton told BBC Somerset:

"We're exactly where we were last season with the same amount of points and knocked out of both cups in quick succession and I'm disappointed because I think we've got a better squad.

"Silly decisions and sloppy goals have cost us tonight and that's something we've got to learn from.

"We're now without Sam Williams for three games for a piece of stupidity and now other people are going to get their chance."

Match Report 2.

City boss Paul Tisdale made three changes from the side that went down 3-0 at The Matchroom Stadium on Saturday with Troy Archibald-Henville, Richard Duffy and Richard Logan coming in for David Noble, John O'Flynn and Rob Edwards. Prior to kick off there was

an emphatic minute's applause for Adam Stansfield and both sets of fans were singing songs in tribute to Stanno throughout the evening. Yeovil have suffered a slow start to their League One campaign although they showed no signs of this with Cameron Stewart, Welsh international Owain Tudur-Jones and Sam Williams all having half- chances.

Then a devastating counter attack saw the Grecians take the lead on 10 minutes. Troy won a header in defence, like he did so many times during an impressive return to the side, and Harley pinged a superb lofted pass into the path of Cureton who controlled it before firing home.

The 35-year-old showed tremendous movement in the final third throughout and on the 20 minute mark his combination with Harley almost resulted in another goal. Harley sent a quick free kick into the path of Cureton but his right footed effort was saved.

Yeovil then seemed to have things their own way for a while. In fact half the ground thought Bowditch's shot that hit the side netting had actually found a way past Paul Jones on 68 minutes.

At the other end City carved out their first real chance of the second half, Cureton and then Thomson having efforts blocked. Then a counter attack saw Logan race clear from Dunne's pass but on-loan keeper John Sullivan saved well and minutes later City's number 20 headed wide at the back post.

The Grecians were made to pay for their missed chances when Walsh's low drive flew into the corner after City failed to clear a ball. But just two minutes later the City fans had a great view of their second goal.

Thomson scampered

down the line and whipped in the perfect ball into the box for Cureton to fire a low effort into the corner. The trio then celebrated in the corner with the travelling support and Thomson made some fans' nights as he handed out high-fives to delighted Grecians.

It was all City after Cureton's fine finish, with Logie's close range header being saved and Harley's daisy-cutter flying inches wide on 87 minutes before he had the final say of a very enjoyable evening.

Liam Sercombe was fouled and up stepped Harley to curl a stunning free kick into the top corner deep into injury time. An away win at last and one step closer to Wembley.
