BBC match report –
A freak own goal two minutes from time by Lincoln goalkeeper Rob Burch handed Exeter the victory that boosts their bid to secure automatic promotion.
The Grecians had looked set to drop out of the top three until Dean Moxey's long-range strike hit Burch and went in after it had initially struck the post.
The goal proved just enough for Exeter who had worked hard to contain Lincoln.
Exeter keeper Paul Jones made two vital saves, from Andy Hutchinson's long-ranger and then Nathan Adams's shot.
Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale told BBC Radio Devon:
"It's a massive three points for us - the way that we came in at the end, I am just exhausted from the game.
"We made a big effort and we scored fortuitously - and sometimes you just need that sort of goal.
"We'll take any points we can get at the moment, the players are jubilant and we march on to our next game."
