Craig Farrell's free-kick kept Exeter in touch with Accrington and Grays at the top of the Conference table.

A quiet first half ended with a bang after Lee Fowler's handball gave Exeter a free-kick and Farrell stepped up to arrow a shot into the top corner.

Boro defender Simon Weaver almost levelled with a volley, while Tony Hackworth squandered the hosts' best chance with a misjudged lob.

In the closing stages tempers flared and three Boro players were booked.
