Confident Chesterfield hit goal trail in style
CHESTERFIELD 5 EXETER 1

CHESTERFIELD stormed to the top of Division Four at Saltergate on Saturday with a fluent display of attacking football against Exeter. But it wasn't until the 42nd minute that they went ahead, improving youngster Phil Brown taking advantage of a defensive blunder to score from close range. On the stroke of half-time Chestefield scored a decisive second after Danny O'Shea tripped Newton in the box. Newton's spot kick was saved but was ordered to be retaken because the Exeter 'keeper Geoff Wood was judged to have moved. Steve Kendal this time stepped up and again Wood saved but Kendal followed in to score from the 'keeper's parry. Moss added a third a minute after the restart when he slotted home a Newton cross and Chesterfield's confidence was best illustrated in the 56th minute when Brown tapped a Kendal corner down for Steve Spooner who scored with an impressive volley from 30 yards.

Two minutes later defender Les Hunter scored with a diving header from a John Matthews free kick and the rout was complete. Ray Pratt scored an 81st minute consolation goal for Exeter.
