Match 23
21st December 1984
Tranmere Rovers (a)

Tranmere 3 (Clayton 2, Rodaway), Exeter 2 (Pratt, Morgan).

Rovers almost slip up

Tranmere Rovers defeated Exeter 3-2 at Prenton Park last night but nearly threw away a three goal lead for the second week running. Rovers cruised into their three-goal lead by the 63rd minute and it could have been more but for some excellent goalkeeping by Wood. Clayton and Clark created havoc and Clayton took his goals tally for the season to 20, netting in the ninth minute after Wood failed to collect a high ball and again in 63 minutes from a perfect defence-splitting pass by Clarke. In between Rodaway headed home in the 48th minute. Exeter looked a poor side and had O'Shea and McNichol booked for dissent. Tranmere later bacame careless. Pratt scored for Exeter in 84 minutes after a quick break from defence. Then in 86 minutes Platt lost possession and presented a second goal for Morgan. Fortunately Exeter never threatened to get an equaliser.
