Match 01
15 August 1970
Scunthorpe (h)

SATURDAY 15th AUGUST 1970.

TEN MINUTES OF JOY FOR CITY.

Exeter City 1, Scunthorpe 1

EXETER'S start against a far from impressive Scunthorpe was neither crowned with promise for the future, nor clouded with disaster. They got a point, should have had both, and played some good and some bad football. It really was as straightforward as that. On the credit side Exeter's defence generally looked sound enough certainly for all Scun thorpe's threatening approach work they did little in front of goal. And there were moments when Exeter's attack looked capable of producing the sort of football that forces the other side into making mistakes and so creating openings. The trouble was that Exeter also made a lot of silly mistakes at times, that their passing was too often carelessly inaccurate, and the fault that in the end cost them a win, they did not take the chances they did create.

CRISPNESS

The first half saw Exeter getting in a couple of good shots-one from Fred Binney produced a superb save from Geoff Barnard but in the main looking a run of-the-mill combination. It was in this half that Scun thorpe were at their best. Their approach work had business a like crispness and decisiveness that was certainly missing from Exeter. But even so their concrete attempts at goal were few and far between, mainly because in a calm, unspectacular way, the Exeter defence did its work with utter efficiency. The nearest Scunthorpe came to getting one in this half was when Angus Davidson lashed in a rasp ing drive that brought a beautiful save from Bob Wilson. In the second half Exeter looked and played a good deal better. The result was they got a goal in e 50th minute. Alan Banks set the move off with an intelligent and accurate pass to John Corr. He ran well, and timed his cross at the exact moment that Fred Binney ran through to head in. It should have been just the beginning for Exeter, but instead within 12 minutes Scunthorpe were back on terms. A Graham Foxton freekick found the head of Nigel Cassidy, who directed the ball across the goal to Kevin Keegan, who had the easiest of chances and scored. Despite this set-back, Exeter were still in control of the game and played well enough, and made enough openings to have regained the lead. But a combination of slowness and off-the- target shooting meant that those crucial chances were wasted, and Exeter had to be content with a draw.
