At last Exeter City have won away from home They became the first side to take the points at Southport this season, and it was City's first away win for nine months. Barry Rowan scored both goals giving him 5 in 4 league matches this season, City took the points through being able to soak up all the punishment that Southport could throw at them. City used fast direct raids, which always troubled the home side, although they did not pay off until the 72nd minute when Rowan took his chance from Fred Binney's pass, He struck again as exeter began to give Southport the run around as they moved the ball from man to man Earlier City had to clear two shots off the line with Peter Shearing beaten, but these were isolated incidents. Exeter deserved their success because of their stout rearguard action and their ability to take their chances, and if they can maintain this form either way points will surely follow. Briuan Sharples did not resume at the start of the second half after suffering a shoulder injury. John Wingate dropped back and he did a good job alongside Mike balson,
Match Summary
Southport record falls to Exeter
Southport dominated play for so long against Exeter City last night that it was incredible they should lose their 100 per cent. home record as a result a 2-0 defeat. Exeter, who played throughout the second half without centre half Brian Sharples, who sustained a shoulder injury, showed their ability to soak up punishment and then hit back to take advantage of an overstretched home defence to score twice in the last 18 minutes. Outside right Barry Rowan was the marksman on each occasion in the 72nd and 88th minutes. Southport did not have much luck with their finishing. Twice good efforts were cleared from the line, twice they had the ball in the net, only for the points to be disallowed and then Malcolm Rassell hit the bar. One small crumb of consolation was that Alan Cocks showed up well on his debut although it is obvious Southport front line is still lacking in craft.
CITY KEEPER IS OUT FOR A MONTH.
Bob Wilson, Exeter City's experienced goalkeeper is expected to be out of football for at least a month, During Saturday's game at Chester he broke a bone in the back of his handDuring the second half Wilson had to receive treatment after taking a kick on his hand and went to hospital in Southport after the match, X rays conformed a break, Wilson played extremely well at Chester saving Exeter from an even bigger defeat. The rest of the City party had travelled onto Southport for the Monday game.
