Biographical Text

Signed as an apprentice by Exeter City, Kirkup progressed to earn a full contract with the club in May 1983. He had made his league debut though whilst still an apprentice when he lined up against Burnley as a 16-year-old at St James’ Park in March 1982. After playing 8 league matches for City in his first season, and a further 17 the next, Kirkup won a regular place in the side throughout the 1983-84 season. He was to also score his only league goal for the club in a 2-1 home defeat against Newport County in October 1983. Kirkup was released on a free transfer at the end of the 1985-86 season and signed for Western League side, Torrington. Kirkup, who later played for Truro City (he was playing for them in 1992-93 and 1993-94) and Millbrook, joined the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in Plymouth and regularly played for their representative side. He was appointed assistant manager at Bovey Tracey in the summer of 2010 and then took on a caretaker manager’s role until December of that year.
