Before this match Scunthorpe had only registered one victory at their Old Showground. Exeter almost took a 4th minute lead when Barnard saved well from Barry Rowan, Play was evenly shared until the 39th minute when Keegan out jumped the City defence to head Scunthorpe in front. A minute later Cassidy hit the bar with Exeter rocking and then Campbell Crawford cleared off the line. A minute before half time Fred Binney saw a shot scrambled off the Scunthorpe line, Brian Sharples who was injured before half time did not appear fopr the second half and was replaced by John Wingate. In the 65th minute Scunthorpe went further ahead when Cassidy hooked the ball past Peter Shearing. Then City wre reduced to 10 men as Graham Parker was led off the field, Although he did return he was obviously far from happy. Exeter were really under pressure now, Cassidy's header scraped the crossbar and the same player with 5 minutes to go netted again with a close range shotIn the dying minutes Shearing did exceptionally well to save a shot from almost point blank range from Heath.

Binney and Co. squander chances

Good first-half chances were missed by both Scunthorpe United and Exeter City in their Fourth Division clash at Scunthorpe. Keegan for Scunthorpe and Binney for Exeter miscued some easy positions; Rowan missed an easy chance for Exeter and Davidson shot narrowly over for Scunthorpe. After Cassidy had shot wide from a good position Keegan put Scunthorpe ahead in the 38th minute, and both Cassidy and Keegan went close to increasing it.
