Exeter City's two points from their victory at Somerton Park could be as worthless as a dud cheque in a few months. For judging by the way some of the Newport County officials were talking the club face a real struggle to finish the season, so poor is their financial position, Exeter deserved their win, their second successive away win, but the game was a poor one, full of scrappy football. The important goal came in the minute from Joe Gadston, The conditions did not favour high quality football. The pitch was extremely hard and often the bounce of the ball was uncertain, But City worked hard and might have won by a bigger margin had Fred Binney and John Corr each taken a second half chance, Newport never looked like scoring apart from a Brown header which was acrobatically tipped over the bar by Peter Shearing, Mike Balson and John Wingate were impressive in the back four, They won virtually everything in the air with Wingate proving that wing is his best position, Newport did improve in the last 15 minutes and one wondered if City would give away a late goal as they have done in the past, but they held out for another win.
