Exeter showed some of their infuriating weaknesses, and surprised everybody by not only getting an equaliser but by playing one of their typical barn-storming finishes which nearly brought victory. But at least nobody should complain about this ball match which entertained. Like a rich farm- it had a bit of everything. The first half was a really lively encounter with both sides playing football, the accent refreshingly on attack, and with more than a fair helping of good football as the foundations to the first 45 minutes. The 1-1 interval score was one with which nobody could complain. But then, as far as Exeter were concerned, everything went wrong. As Exeter faded, so Colchester took control. Their big, midfield players stamped their authority on the game and became the power-house from which fluent, accurate passing movements were steadily driven at Exeter. In comparison, Exeter's passing again became wild, construction and method virtually disappeared, and once more they struggled. The forwards always seemed to be bunched up and unable to move forward with any sort of smoothness, There was a terrible lack of support and no overlapping, and although they kept pegging away few gave them much hope after Colchester had taken the lead. But the little man who so often has done it before, worked the magic again. Alan Banks, making his 200th appearance for the club and now needing only three more goals to break Graham Rees' all time record of 83 goals, burst away on his own to pick up a John Mitten through ball. Mitten had shaken off a tackle to get himself into a position to set the goal up, and Banks did not waste the chance, He took the goal with calm expertise, and Exeter were back in the game. The final 10 minutes saw Exeter pushing everything they had into attack, and Colchester's previous calm tended to crack. They had always looked a little suspect under pressure, and now it looked as if the sheer gusto and enthusi- asm of Exeter's play might bring a win, but time ran out. Exeter's first goal, in the 22nd minute was scored superbly by Joe Gadston after he had collected a Barry Rowan cross, and weaved his way through the defence. Colchester equalised through their right winger Ken Jones, and went ahead in the 50th minute through centre forward Roy Massey.
POPULAR NEW STYLE CITY PROGRAMME.
Many changes have taken place behind the scenes at St James' Park in recent months. The club have launched a new pool, opened a new club shop, and produced a new style programme, All three developments off the field are linked with the appointment of a Commercial Manager, John Hillier. One of his jobs is to edit the new look programme, restyled this season to meet modern requirements, The programme is a big improvement on the club's previous publication and the initial sales on the terraces are encouraging, Two of the best features are the A to Z look at the visiting clubs and players and a 'Where Are They Now? look at former Exeter City players.
