Exeter City's impressive record under the St James' Park floodlights over the past couple of years continued with this good win over Aldrshot. It was just the tonic they needed, because it is so tight in the middle regions of the Fourth Division at the moment. Considering the conditions, a strong wind and squally rain, it was an entertaining match and in the end both teams might have added to their final totals, but City deserved their win. City were two goals to the good in the opening 15 minutes through Joe Gadston and Alan Banks, Aldershot however hit back in the 23rd minute when Howarth scored with a good header, Had the visitors finishing been better they might have scored again,, before John Corr added a third Exeter goal with a cracking 20 yard drive, A terrible defensive error by Aldershot in the 49th minute led to City's last goal, Gadston was left clear and he calmly slotted the ball past Dixon, Shortly afterwards John Wingate had a header blocked on the line, then John Mitten shot narrowly wide, Aldershot with the wind in their favour missed out on a couple of occasions while Bob Wilson produced some good work.

Match Summary

EXETER Set the pattern with a fourth-minute goal by Joe Gadston, £1,000 buy from Bristol Rovers. Alan Banks made it two-up in the thirteenth minute but Aldershot, encouraged by player- manager Jimmy Melia, pulled one back nine minutes later through a Jack Howarth header. But it was virtually over in the thirty-first minute when a John Mitten cross was ham- mered in by winger John Corr. Gadston wrapped it up with his second-and twelfth goal of the season.
