Shambling and pathetic' Exeter City slumped to a shock defeat to York City, who had not won in 10 away trips and lost 7 consecutive league matchesCity were terrible in the first half although there was a little more life from them after the intervalYork deserved their win. They went ahead after 6 minuted and made sure of the points in the last minute. The opening goal was a penalty after John Wingate had brought down Hewitt, Mackin successfully took the spot kickExeter were looking very lethargic against a York side who easily were the better side, Indeed it took City 40 minutes to test Hillyard and that was an inswinging corner, York could easily have scored again before half time. Player manager John Newman obviously gave his players a stiff talking to at half time for Exeter played a lot better in the second half. Alan Banks and Joe Gadston came more into the game, but York were still looking useful on the break, In the last minute they scored againBoyer worked through the City defence and crossed for Aimson to head past Wilson,

CLUBHOUSE PLAN BY EXETER CITY.

Exeter City are investigating the possibility of building a supporters clubhouse costing in the region of £10,000 on land behind one of the goals at St James Park. The plan was outlined by one of the directors, Walter Rice, at last night's meeting of the Exeter City Football and Athletic Club Ltd. He said that the club were approaching a number of brewers for a loan, provided they sold their drinks. Two concrete offers have been received by City, one of which was pending, The club has been offered a loan of £7,500 by one company, while another has offered £1,500 as a gift plus a loan which the City have to negotiate. The clubhouse would include a skittle alley and a room or rooms measuring 60 feet by 30 feet, Judging by information received from other clubs this would bring in a big income." Fred Dart, acting chairman, described a clubhouse as a real money spinner, Shareholder Mr L Bickers commenting on the season's past financial loss of £8,164 said that compared with Torquay United, Exeter City were a cinderella club. He feared that Torquay would draw the support unless something was done. He suggested that the board should be strengthened by one or two directors the club should be thrown open to sponsorship. Another point made at the meeting came from Fred Dart who said that a saviour to the club would be for the local Corporation to buy the ground and let it back to them in perpetuity Attending they meeting was the Mayor of Exeter, Percy Hilton, a shareholder who said he could not imagine Exeter City Council ever buying the ground but he agreed that a good football team was a good asset for the city. Mr Rice said that the amount of money given to the club by the Red and White Club had dropped by nearly £12,000 over the last seven years. Shareholders expressed their concern over this.

JOHN WINGATE IS NOT FOR SALE.

Exeter City player manager John Newman has turned down an enquiry for 21 year old utility player John Wingate. He confirmed this week that Scunthorpe United had asked about the former Dawlish Town player and a fee of £3,000 or £4,000 had been mentioned Newman said that he told the Scunthorpe manager Ron Ashman that he was not prepared to release Wingate. He was still learning the game after just 18 months as a professional and was worth more to Exeter City. Other Exeter players are also wanted. Barrow made an enquiry about Alan Banks, while Yeovil Town manager and former City player Mike Hughes asked about the possibility of taking Peter Shearing on loan to help his out of a goalkeeping problem, but Shearing was injured at the time.

THE NEAR POST TO OPEN.

The Near Post- Exeter City Supporters Club (The Grecians) shop in Blackboy Road will be officially opened on Saturday morning at 11am, by Westward Sports announcer Gary Newbon, Meanwhile the Supporters Club have handed over a further cheque for £500 to Exeter City this week, making a total of £1,650 so far this season,

WEDNESDAY 9th DECEMBER 1970.

HOME PARK TIE IS OFF.

Exeter City will kick off at 2.30pm, on Saturday against Southport, All the Football League clubs have received telegrams from the Football League instructing them to kick off not later than 2:30 pm, during the power workers dispute. With the fear of power cuts taking place later in the afternoon this would seen a sensible move. This very fear has led to the postponement of tonight's Devon Professional Bowl semi final between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City. The electricity authorities could not guarantee that there would be no cuts during the watch.
