The game was not a thriller as six goals in 90 minutes might suggest. Indeed it was an untidy scrappy affair for the most part, but a good end product for Exeter, City took a grip on the game in the second half which was a distinct improvement on the fare before the interval, The first half was poor, City's inaccurate passing was a feature but in the second half they showed more determination and more positive running,
Exeter pushed more players forward leaving themselves open at times in defence and Barrow scored twice as a result, Jimmy Giles making his debut as centre half looked a strong player, Alan Banks scored the goal of the match, a typical Banks effort. He was played clear and calmly lifted the ball over the head of the advancing goalkeeper, Barry Rowan had put City into a 25th minute lead, Joe Gadston added a second goal five minutes after the break and Fred Binney netted a third after 70 minutes, Two minutes later Noble scored Barrow, then came the Banks goal and on the stroke of full time Rowlands made the score 4-2.
