Exeter City poached a dramatic late equaliser when new signing Jim Giles (photo) emerged from nowhere and headed City to a 2-2 draw with less than two minutes of the game remaining. It was a sad end for Northampton who for threequarters of the game had put Exeter on the rack. The Cobblers took a 14th minute lead when Fairbrother headed in a fine goal.

Exeter were back on terms within a minute, John Wingate sent Alan Banks away, he beat Neal and slid the ball past Book, For the rest of the game Exeter had to defend desparately at times. The defence was well led by Jim Goiles and he was backed up by Bob Wilson who held firm under pressure, It came as no surprise when Fairbrother scored a second goal after 74 minutes. It was no more than Northampton deserved, Exeter were still causing problems with isolated counter attacks and it was from one such raid in 88th minute that City equalised for a second time, Barry Rowan centred and Giles unmakred and unhindered headed in a close range goal, All credit for City weathering heavy pressure and being sharp enough to cash in on what few goalscoring opportunities that came their way.
