A superb rearguard action earned Exeter City a hard earned point from a goalless battle. For most of the match City were forced to defend desparately but sterling work by Campbell Crawford, Graham Parker, and Bob Vision kept the home forwards out, Exeter relied upon the two san thrust of Fred Binney and Alan Banks in an effort to make headway, but seldom did they create any clearcut chances. At the other end it was a different story. Displaying far sore authority in midfield Southend pressed forward and Wilson and his colleagues had to be constantly alert to hold their line intact, Twice Wilson won the acclaim of the Southend crowd with fine saves from Johnson and Moore, Centre half Jimmy Giles was a tover of strength in the middle after a hesitant start against the menacing Garner, City amassed only four shots in the entire match, such as the superiority of Southend. In the last 10 sinutes when Exeter substituted Newman for for Jimmy Blain, the City hung on tenaciously if somewhat luckily for a share of the points,

Southend needing a victory to make certain of avoiding re-election, were kept out by an eight-man Exeter defence. They were unlucky in the first half when two shots were cleared off the line, but had only them- selves to blame after the interval. Strikers Bill Garner and Terry Johnson both missed clear chances as Exeter held on grimly for a point.
