EXETER CITY 3,

Scorers
Bury: Jones 3, Rudd,
Exeter Wingate, Gadston, Binney, Attendance 2,627,
City began brightly as Barry Rowan and then Fred Binney tried early shots, but gradually Exeter were finding themselves under increasing pressure. In the 16th minute they fell behind when Connely's low centre eluded three defenders and Jones drove the ball home. The goal spurred Bury onto greater efforts, and four minutes from the interval Jones scored again, John Wingate reduced the arrears in the 43rd minute when he headed a delightful goal from a cross from Mike Balson, City began to put their game together but suffered a further blow in the 50th minute when Jones completed his hat trick with a glancing header. Two minutes later, more trouble for Exeter, when Rudd scooped the ball over Bob Wilson into the net, City were really up against it now, but fought gamely on. City were rewarded for their persistence in the 55th minute when Joe Gadston calmly rounded Hancock after beating two defenders to slot home Exeter's second goal, Wilson pulled off another brilliant save from Hamstead as play swung from end to end, Right on the stroke of full time Binney scored to make the scoreline look more respectable
