GARNER RAPS IN TWO MORE

Southend 3, Exeter 0

12th November 1971

Facing Terrific pressure right from the start at Roots Hall last night, Exeter's only few minutes of equality came immediately after half-time. Already two goals behind, they realised that to press forward was their only possible means of saving a point.

That they failed was due entirely to the covering in depth by a Southend defence which refused to be ruffled or drawn out of position. But full credit to John Giles and Fred Binney, who never stopped chasing even half chances.

City were really up against it in the first half as Southend assumed command and they were soon two goals behind. Their defence was caught out of position after 12 minutes when a Dave Elliott cross to the far post was pulled back by Bernie Lewis, and Gary Moore crashed home his shot from 20 yards.

City went further behind eight minutes later when a Billy Best header from a Lewis corner was cleared off the line by Steve Stacey, only for Bill Garner to net from the rebound.

In Exeter's isolated attacks, John Giles went close when his pile driver from the edge of the box was turned for a corner by goal- keeper John Roberts, and two minutes later the same player shot wide when left with a clear run through the middle.

The result was settled at the 77th minute when Southend com- pleted the scoring. Terry Johnson had a shot rebound off a defender, and Garner immediately hit his volley into the roof of the net.

Exeter's best effort in the second half was a 20 yard shot from Graham Parker, which Roberts did well to turn for a corner.

But for the most part, it was only ths eterling work of Jimmy Giles and his co-defenders which prevented City going down by an even bigger margin.

Southend: Roberts; Ternent, Smith, Elliott, Albeson, Jacques, Johnson, Best (Taylor), Garner, Moore, Lewis.

Exeter: Wilson; Stacey (Morris), Blain, Parker, Jimmy Giles, Balson, Morris, Banks, Binney, Wingate, John Giles.

Attendance: 10,107

SOUTHEND kept up their promotion push with a win that lifted them into second place in the Fourth Division.

They threatened to rip Exeter a part as they eased themselves ahead with goals by Gary Moore and Bill Garner in the first twenty minutes. Then Exeter began to hustle them out of their stride and Southend lost all their early rhythm. But Southend's defence was able to smother Exeter's dangerous front-runners. Winger Bernard Lewis was a constant threat to Exeter and had a hand in all three goals. The third came eleven minutes from time when Garner blasted in his eleventh of the season.
