Exeter City Wingate,

Exeter City became the 7th team to have completed the double over Crewe this season, when a goal from John Wingate almost on the stroke of half time gave them the verdict in an undistinguished skirmish at Gresty Road, Exeter had a stiff breeze at their backs in the first half and offten over kicked thier lines, missing out on the advantage. The first half was spilling over into injury time when Wingate pivoted to fire past Crudgington as the ball bounced out of a crowded goalmouth following a left wing raid, Crewe bossed the second half but their lightweight forwards lacked bite and penetration against an Eexter defence which declined to stand on ceremony and got through some dour solid work, Bob Wilson made a trio of saves to fist away wind assisted drives, but other than that he was not seriously troubled, Exeter kept Crewe on their toes with a series of lively counter attacks and they could not be begrudged the victory. Indeed Wingate narrowly missed scoring a second goal with a header that swerved past the post.
