Alan started his career at Charlton Athletic alongside his twin brother Garry. They each progressed through the youth ranks to make brief appearances in the Charlton first-team before they both joined Exeter City on loan in August 1985. Like his brother, Alan only played once for the Grecians in the 2-0 home defeat against Southend United.
Joining Cambridge United on a free transfer in August 1986, Alan totalled 299 league appearances for his new club as he scored 24 goals in the process. He then moved to Premier League side Wimbledon for a fee of £175,000 in July 1993 where he stayed for nearly nine years making 215 league appearances. After a loan spell with Peterborough United, he left Wimbledon to join Luton Town in August 2002 for whom he played just a dozen league games. Alan then signed for Dagenham & Redbridge before having a brief spell with Heybridge Swifts.
Entering management, Alan was assistant- manager at Gravesend and Northfleet (later Ebbsfleet United) between March 2005 August 2009 before taking over at Aveley in May 2010 with his brother Garry as assistant.
He subsequently had spells in various capacities with Hemel Hempstead Town, Eastbourne Borough and Maldon & Tiptree.
