Godfrey: We just let Swindon play

Exeter City 1, Swindon Town 2

EXETER manager Brian Godfrey will not be putting any money on Swindon for promotion, despite seeing them tear his side apart at St James' Park on Saturday to go to the top of the Third Division.

"I thought Swindon played quite well and seemed to work hard for each other," said Godfrey. "But that is not too dif ficult when the other team isn't functioning." Godfrey was angry and puzzled by his own side's poor performance. "We seem to have so many players who are out of form," he said. "Some of them were unrecognisa- ble from the players know.' Godfrey was also upset at the amount of room his players allowed Swindon's brilliant midfield man Roy Carter.

PERFECT

Carter took full advantage of the wide open spaces to run the match for Swindon and he capped a tremendous individual performance with a cracking goal six minutes into the second half. Exeter's goalkeeper Len Bond was penalised for taking too many steps, and Brian Hughes slipped the free kick to Carter for him to score with a perfect chip over the defensive wall. Gary Williams had put Swindon ahead after only five minutes when he banged the ball home at the second attempt after it had twice been cleared off the Exeter goal-line. Tony Kellow pulled one back for Exeter in the 59th minute from the penalty spot after Mike Graham had been harshly penalised for a foul on Ray Pratt.
