Southend 2-1 Exeter City 

On New Years Day 1982 when the Blues scraped home 2-1 in a close affair. In the third minute a shot from Ron Pountney was deflected in by Martyn Rogers and the same player later fouled Keith Mercer in the penalty area, Dave Cusack blasting home the resultant kick to give Blues a 2-0 half time lead. Five minutes from time Exeter struck back when Phil Fisher netted and in the final minute Fisher almost equalised but his shot struck the foot of the fat post.
