Match 44
6th April 1985
Torquay (a)
Report BY DAVID THOMAS
TORQUAY United's young side goes to Aldershot tonight with the re-election pressures increasing as the scramble to get out of the bottom-four turns into a dogfight. United went into the Easter programme fifth from bottom on their best run of the season - three wins from four games.
But Saturday's 1-1 draw with Exeter City at Plainmoor was not good enough to maintain their position. Halifax surprisingly won at Hartlepool and yesterday Rochdale, who have games in hand on all the clubs in trouble, won at Halifax. Draws are no longer enough -it is better to win one and lose one than draw two.Manager Dave Webb is not expected to look for changes at the Recreation Ground tonight, although he has more experienced men like club captain John Impey and strik-er John Sims available.
Against Exeter, in a scrappy match not helped by a strong wind and unpredictable pitch. United had the better of the second half and they will need to retain that spirit if they are to beat Aldershot. Just as United were about to celebrate their first win over Exeter for 10 years, with Mark Loram's 79th minute goal from a Steve Pugh cross, City equalised two minutes later when Danny O'Shea moved up from midfield and was unmarked to chest down a cross and volley past Kenny Allen. Neither team looked particularly impressive, though United's loan defender Aiden McCaffery gave another cool display at the back and Allen made several good saves as City created better chances from less possession.
