Penalty award tough on City

Burnley 3, Exeter City 1

EXETER CITY are still seeking their first away League win of the season after Saturday's defeat against improving Burnley at Turf Moor.

It was a closer match than the scoreline suggests and a controversial late penalty clinched three points for the Lancashire club.

A strong and determined period of second half pres- sure brought a goal for Exeter from Martin Ling but two minutes later Kevin Hird made it 3-1 following a spot-kick decision by Wrex- ham referee John Lloyd that looked extremely harsh. Burnley won thanks to an own goal and two penalties, an unusual sequence of scoring. It was always going to be difficult for Colin Appleton's team after conceding a 14th minute own goal. It was scored by Jim McNicol, who turned the ball into his own net in an unsuccessful attempt to clear a hard, low cross from the right by winger Neil Grewcock. Burnley were generally on top for the remainder of the first half but did not increase their lead until five minutes after the interval. There could be no reasonable cause for complaint about Burnley's first penalty as Grewcock was brought down by full back Keith Viney after a storming run into the penalty area. Hird calmly sent the spot-kick past keeper John Shaw. Exeter hit back bravely and Burnley keeper Joe Neenan as in the thick of the action after earlier having been unemployed. He had to make a series of saves and was rescued when one shot from Garry Jackson was, kicked off the line by 17-year-old full back Darren Heesom. It was no more than Exeter deserved when Ling scored with a perfect diving header into the corner of the net. Burnley's defence looked decidedly shaky at this stage but the pressure was relieved by another penalty decision. Mr. Lloyd decided that McNicol had fouled Derrick Parker inside the penalty area when the challenge appeared to come at least two yards outside. Again Hird made no mistake from the spot. Shaw made the best save of the game in the second half when he reacted quickly to turn away a fierce shot from former West Ham striker Alan Taylor. Exeter had Nick Marker, Jackson and substitute Tony Kellow all booked for fouls.
