Match 17
24th October 1987
Crewe Alexandra (h)
EXETER CITY 3
Massey, Batty, Kellow.
CREWE ALEXANDRA 1
Platt.
Half-time 1-0
Played at St James's Park, Exeter. Saturday October 24th 1987. Attendance 2,149.
Exeter City:- Gwinnett; Cooper, Viney; Carter, Taylor, Massey; Batty, Edwards, Kellow, Delve, Harrower
Crewe Alexandra:- Greygoose; Goodison, Pemberton; Wright, Billing, Gage; Platt, Bodak, Eli, Cutler, Murphy.
The City got three goals and three points, but how much confidence they derived from this victory must still be open to question. The result flattered an Exeter side that had lost its last four matches and it was only Crewe's failure to force home their superiority in the first half that swayed the game. Massey scored against the run of the play two minutes before the interval and Exeter battled bravely to remain in front from then onwards.
The old City skipper, John Delve, released by Hereford at the start of the season, made an unexpected but largely successful return, turning out for the Grecians for the first time in four and a half years.
Gwinnett, deputising for the injured John Shaw, had another good game, saving well from Platt in the 25th minute. Exeter extended their lead ten minutes after the change of ends when Kellow turned a centre from Harrower into the net from close range, but Crewe hit back 40 seconds later when Platt headed past Gwinnett from ten yards. Crewe's attempts at a late equaliser proved futile, and right on the final whistle Batty fired a low shot into the corner of the net from an Kellow's through ball.
Massey, Batty, Kellow.
