Two goals from Gilligan finally ended Exeter's partial revival at Ninian Park and pushed them nearer to the feared trapdoor at the bottom of the Fourth Division.takke If it had not been for the outstanding performance of Shaw in the Exeter goal Cardiff's score could have reached double figures.
In the opening minutes Exeter looked a poor side as Cardiff sought an early lead. In the third minute Sanderson's header was trapped by Gilligan with his left foot, add as three defenders stood watching he on turned and volleyed into the roof of the net with his other foot with Shaw well beaten.
In the fifteenth minute Exeter equalised direct from a corner kick taken by Rowbotham as Judge was bundled into the net by Edwards. The referee immediately pointed to the centre, ignoring the protests by Cardiff that their goalkeeper had been fouled. Two headers by Gilligan were saved by Shaw, who later tipped
a header from Sanderson over the bar. Exeter took the lead in the second half greatly against the run of the play when Batty headed past Judge in 62 minutes, but Cardiff then began to look threatening as they speeded up their game, and Shaw saved from Gilligan and Sanderson and saw another volley from Gilligan crash against the crossbar. A header from Boyle was put through his own goal by Viney and another volley by Gilligan gave Cardiff their third goal and the ultimate victory.
