Sentence was served and the punishment carried out for Exeter City as they were bundled out of the F.A.Cup in the first round. The City were outplayed and out-manned by a classy Orient side determined to avenge a shoek League defeat at the Leyton Stadium in September.
Exeter, who played in white jerseys and black shorts to avoid a colour clash, were beaten by a goal in each half, from Godfrey after 42 minutes and Hull after 71. Exeter's midfield was static, and the new player from Plymouth, Rowbotham, was so ineffective that he was substituted by Olsson eleven minutes after the change of ends. A mistake by Massey as early as the sixth minute almost cost Exeter a goal, but from Comfort's centre Shinners put the ball over the bar.
Exeter's best scoring attempt, in the eleventh minute, was a cracking 30 yards drive by Edwards which hit the crossbar, butxfolieving that but from then on the City gradually faded out to let the Orient dominate the play.
In the 26th minute a similar shot at the other end, by Smalley, thundered against the City goalpost. The City did enough in the first half to warrant a glimmer of hope in the second, but instead of growing in stature they wilted.
Shinners had a goal disallowed for offside, and Hull with a clever overhead kick just cleared the crossbar. Andrew Watson came on for Taylor in the last ten minutes, but it was too late to change the inevitable.
