The latest shock from St James's Park is that the City's manager, Colin Appleton, has resigned his post and has returned to his home in Scarborough. And John Delve, installed at the helm following an emergency board meeting of Exeter City's directors, has gone from relative obscurity to the top of the management tree at Exeter in the space of just a few months. The City players knew nothing of Appleton's departure until after their usual training on Friday morning, and when the manager failed to turn up it was Delve who led the coaching unaware that it was about to become a regular occurrence.
