Second half goals by Wilkins and Tempest lifted Colchester to the top of the League table and earned them a new club record with nine games unbeaten, as they bagged all the Seasonal goodwill that was going at St James's Park on Boxing Day. Once again the City supplied plenty of hard work and honest endeavour, but their finishing was poor. The goal famine that has throttled their progress in recent months looked no nearer a solution.
It is difficult to imagine in the light of this season's happenings how the City were the top club in the division a matter of three months ago!
