Half-time 1-0
Played at Molineux Park, Wolverhampton.
Monday December 28th 1987. Attendance 15,588.
Wolves:- Kendall; Stoutt, Thompson; Streete, Clarke, Robinson; Dennison, Vaughan, Bull, Mutch, Downing.
Exeter City:- Shaw; Harrower, Viney; Carter, Taylor, Watson; Batty, Cooper, Edwards, O'Connell, Kellow.
Without improving their moderate away record Exeter City at least showed that even such a well balanced side as the Wolves can be made to struggle before they crashed 3-0 to the Molineux men.
With their speedy front runners Edwards and O'Connell capably backed up by the evergreen and energetic Kellow the City disappointed only in their finishing. With a little more accuracy in front of goal they might have caused a big surprise.
Exeter attacked from the start and O'Connell sent in a fierce shot which cleared the crossbar by inches only. But in the fourth minute the Wolves took the lead when Shaw was beaten by a header from Mutch following a corner by Dennison on the left.
After this the Wolves failed to master Exeter's persistent offside trap for the rest of the first half, and the City were thwarted when Kendall saved from O'Connell by punching the ball over the bar for a corner, and when Streete cleared off the goal-line from Watson.
The speed of Edwards troubled the home defence on numerous occasions, and as stated, it was only the poor shooting that let Exeter down.
The second half saw a different story, and two goals by the Wolves, one from a penalty, within two minutes of each other, gave them a clear victory although they were flattered by such a wide margin. There was not three goals difference between the teams. The attendance figure of fifteen and a half thousand is the highest for a Fourth Division match this season.
