Match Report 2
(From 1993/94 programmes)
All was not well on the playing front as far as Exeter City were concerned. The season was proving to be one of struggle, without a League win for four matches, and only eight victories all season. Not surprisingly the Grecians were found towards the foot of the Fourth Division table. City visited Cambridge United who themselves were not enjoying the best of fortunes, and this was duly reflected in the attendance for the visit of Exeter with only 1,878 spectators being present at the Abbey Stadium for the Friday evening fixture. Alas, City's poor record continued as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat. Dean Edwards netted for Exeter whilst Gary Clayton and Ronnie Hildersley scored the winning goals for Cambridge. The home side contained some familiar names to Devon's football followers. lan Benjamin was later to play for Exeter City, whilst Alan Kimble had already been on loan at St James Park. Lindsay Smith had played for Plymouth Argyle, and Les Lawrence for Torquay United. Just to add to the Devonian connection, full back Gary Poole was last season playing at Plymouth Argyle.
