Jamie Harris, (photo) making his Football League debut, executed the perfect daylight robbery at St James's Park, marking his first appearance with the winning goal in the 65th minute. The eighteen year-old centre-forward converted a centre from Rowbotham with the coolness of a seasoned player to send Scarborough home rueing a whole series of mixed wasted chances that could have settled the game in the opening 45 minutes.

It was understandable for Scarborough to feel displeased with their performance on their first visit to Exeter, for if they had matched Harris's finishing skill the points would have undoubtedly been theirs.

They had four gilt-edged opportunities in the first half. Cook miskicked right in front of goal after the game was only five minutes old, and Gwinnett smothered a shot from Lowe on the goal-line. Watson was too slow for Lowe at the Scarborough man straked down the wing, and Mell made a hash of the resultant centre by slicing the ball wide of an open goal. Then Lowe with only Gwinnett to beat ballooned the ball high over the bar from inside the penalty area.

The absence of any goalmouth details from the Scarborough end just about summed up the City's contribution until midway through the second half Rowbotham shot across the face of the goal, and this was followed shortly by the shot by Harris which won the game.

  • Exeter have transferred Simon Milton to Torquay United, the former Ipswich forward,
