Played at St James's Park, Exeter.
Saturday March 19th 1988.
Attendance 1,628.
Exeter City:- Gwinnett; Harrower, Viney; Delve, Taylor, Watson; Hiley, Olsson, Harris, O'Connell, Rowbotham.
Hereford United:- Rose; Rodgerson, Devine; Stevens, Pejic, Maddy; McLoughlin, Leonard, Benbow, Stant, Leadbitter.
Scott Hiley crowned a spirited second half rally by the City with his first goal in senior football. The 19 year-old forward, whose even younger accomplice Harris stole the headlines last week did not intend to be outdone.
When the ball ran loose on the penalty line 20 minutes from the finish he cracked in a sudden drive which rebounded off the far post into the net to give Rose no possible chance of savinguiiiiuii Jo I think.
The City showed a great improvement in their play in the second half after losing two early goals, scored by Stant after 13 minutes and by Benbow six minutes afterwards. The revival commenced seven minutes after the restart when Hereford failed to clear a corner and Olsson's low shot entered the net off Stevens's foot.
That was the start of a prolonged spell of speedy attacking football by the Grecians that could have seen them go from two goals down to one up.
O'Connell had a powerful header saved by Rose, and another header, by Taylor, was cleared by Rodgerson on the goal line. It had been an open game right from the start and Hereford could still have clinched it in the 78th minute when Stant was put through in the centre, but Gwinnett came out of his goal to dive at the forward's feet and scramble the ball clear.
