WREXHAM 3
Russell 3,
EXETER CITY 0
Half-time 0-0
Played at the Racecourse, Wrexham.
Tuesday March 22nd 1988.
Referee Mr C.Trussell
Attendance 963.
Wrexham:- Morris; Salathiel, Wright; Jones, Williams, Flynn; Preece, Hunter, Kearns, Russell, Carter.
Exeter City:- Gwinnett; Harrower, Viney; Delve, Taylor, Watson; Hiley, Olsson, Harris, O'Connell, Rowbotham.
A hotly disputed penalty kick in the 67th minute knocked the stuffing out of a battling City team at Wrexham. They had stopped the Welsh side from scoring through sheer hard work and enterprise and were stunned when the referee Mr C.Trussell of Liverpool, awarded a penalty against them for handball.
Player-manager Delve led the protests but to no avail, and the former Portsmouth forward Kevin Russell put Wrexham in the lead from the penalty spot.
Exeter's defence crumbled near the end of this hard fought and stamina sapping encounter on the heavy ground and a second goal was obtained by Russell when he beat Taylor for possession and stabbing home a left-footed shot itext Ek from an acute angle.
Three minutes from time the City's night of woe had been completed when Russell dribbled from the half-way line past two City defenders before shooting past Gwinnett for the goal which completed his hat-trick. The City had also suffered a blow midway through the first half when Watson was forced to retire with a knee injury. Exeter had relied on their oft-criticised offside trap to keep Wrexham at bay, and their only attacking move before the interval was a header from Taylor which went over the bar.
The Exeter players were adamant after the match that there had been no handling offence, and it did seem from the grandstand that only the referee had seen anything wrong, but it cost the City dearly.
