An instantly forgettable season ended with the visit of Halifax Town to St James Park on 7th May 1988. The City had ended the campaign in twenty second spot, and with Halifax only four places higher in the table, it was there- fore no surprise that the match was viewed less than enthusiastically by the Grecians supporters - with just 1,602 bothering to turn up.
Exeter led 1-0 at the interval thanks to a John Delve goal, but then proceeded to throw every- thing away by conceding two Halifax goals scored by Peter Duffield and Lee Richardson. Not surprisingly five of the Exeter City side were released by the club a few days later in the hope of better things to come the following season. Leading goalscorer in league matches for the Grecians at the end of the 1987-88 season was Dean Edwards with 12 goals, followed by Brendan O'Connell with 11, three of which were netted from the penalty spot.
EXETER CITY: Mel Gwinnett, Steve Harrower, Keith Viney, Roy Carter, Shaun Taylor, Richard Cooper, Paul Olsson, John Delve (Paul Batty), Dean Edwards, Brendan O'Connell, Darran Rowbotham.
HALIFAX TOWN: Paddy Roche, Phil Brown, Bill Barr (Adrian Shaw), Mike Matthews, David Robinson, Paul Kendall, Dean Martin (Lee Richardson), Steve Thornber, Peter Duffield, Terry McPhillips, Russell Black.
