Match 12
15th October 1988
Grimsby (h)
15th OCTOBER 1988
EXETER CITY 2 GRIMSBY TOWN 1
Not an overwhelming performance from the lads, but if we can put three points in the bag with a mediocre display, then it must be a good sign. Steve Neville yet again got us off to a fine start, with a penalty in the first few minutes. The ball had been handled in the area, and Nevs punished the offender by sending the keeper the wrong way from twelve yards. Unfortunately, our first half superiority was not turned into goals, and what could have been a cricket score was kept down to just one at half-time. Grimsby slowly began to work themselves back in to the match after the break, helped by City's contentment to sit back on their lead. Their equaliser, which came with a quarter of an hour to go, had been on the cards for most of the second-half. Our disappointment was only to last for two minutes, as Shaun Taylor powerfully headed home a corner from the left. City had obviously learned the lesson of earlier in the half, as they were on the offensive for the rest of the game.
