Match 39
17th March 1989
Halifax T (a)
MARCH 17th 1989
HALIFAX TOWN O EXETER CITY 3
We had lost our previous three encounters at The Shay without scoring, but City made up for that with a scintillating display of attacking football on this Friday night. Having lost our previous six away games, even a point would have been something to cheer about, but we left The Shay joyfully contemplating that we could easily have scored more. The one man who stopped us doing 90 was Ronnie Sinclair, the Halifax goalkeeper, who denied Richard Young three times with breathtaking saves in the closing stages.
City's first goal came on 27 minutes. McDermott, who was involved in everything, and Young set up top scorer Dazza and he finished with ease. Up until then the game had been fairly even, but, as in the encounter at Exeter in September, Halifax never looked the same after going behind.
McDermott was also heavily involved with the second goal just after the interval. His free kick was knocked on by Youngie and Shaun Taylor rose to head the ball in. Thereon, it was all City, and Sinclair alone frustrated the hungry Exeter attack. Even he could not stop the third goal though, a woefully short back pass kaft Richard Young in the clear and he calmly slotted home his first goal for City.
