Football League- Autoglass Trophy
Plymouth Argyle v Exeter City

Exeter City followed up their Boxing Day league victory over arch rivals Plymouth Argyle with a great draw at Home Park to ensure qualification for the next round of the Autoglass Trophy. Indeed, City close the came to snatching another win in the closing minutes when a drive from Scott Hiley whistled narrowly past the wrong side of the post. City had gone behind in the second half to a bizarre goal. An attempted clearance by Peter Whiston hit Argyle striker Dwight Marshall and the ball rebounded off his knees to loop agonizingly over the head of keeper Kevin Miller into the net. The setback was to provide just the spark that the Grecians needed to spur them into action, for until then the game appeared to be slipping away from them. The first half had been a somewhat quiet affair both keepers had to be alert on a couple of occasions. The Argyle pitch was heavy following heavy rain, which made it difficult for both sides to string moves together. After the break however, City began to get a grip on the game with midfielder Danny Bailey prompting and foraging away. Manager Alan Ball introduced 16 year old winger Martin Phillips for the injured Scott Daniels and the youngster immediately showed the potential he has for the future by leaving three Argyle players in his wake with a run down the right. City deservedly equalised in the 69th minute through Andy Cook. Dave Cooper passed to Cook just inside his own half wide on the left touchline, and the Argyle defence backed off as the City defender strode forward making ground. On the edge of the area Cook fired a low shot to Peter Shilton's right which bounced over the keeper's outstretched arms into the net. Exeter piled on the pressure looking for the winner, with Bailey firing wide from 25 yards, and Tom Kelly sending another effort just off target. Then the on loan Joe Gallen from Watford, shaved the Argyle crossbar with a shot after great work by Bailey.
