Match 03
21 August 1993.
York City (h)

Exeter City 1 York City 2.

Saturday 21 August 1993.

Referee:

Att: 2807

The Grecians slip to a 2-1 defeat against York City in their opening Endsleigh League Division Two fixture at St. James Park. A goal either side of half time from Gary Swann and Glenn Naylor in the 41st and 48th minutes, and prove to be decisive. Despite a good fightback by the City, and a successfully taken penalty by Ronnie Jepson after Ronnie Robinson had been brought down, the Grecians remain pointless from their opening two matches. Sixteen year old trainee goalkeeper Paul Barnes is on the City substitute bench for the first time for a game watched by a disappointing opening attendance of 2,807.

Exeter City: Fox, White, Robinson, Bailey, Daniels, Whiston, Storer, Coughlin, Jepson, Ross, Wigley (Minett).

York City: Kiely, McMillan, Hall, Pepper, Tuill, Atkin, McCarthy, Cooper (Warburton, Naylor (Barratt), Swann, Canham.

  • Exeter City are linked in the Midlands Press with Birmingham City goalkeeper Andy Gosney. The 6'4" custodian has lost his place in the Birmingham side to former Grecians keeper Kevin Miller, and was formerly on the books of Portsmouth where he worked under the guidance of then Pompey manager Alan Ball.
  • The new look Grecians Gazette match programme goes on Isale for the first time for the match against York City and proves to be a hit among sup- porters. There is plenty of read- ing for supporters, for not only is the programme on sale, but also new editions of 'We'll Score Again' and the 'Exe Directory'.
