Coca Cola Cup (League Cup) First round second leg.

Exeter win 2-1 on aggregate.

Portsmouth goalkeeper Andy Gosney, 29 year old 6'4" tall, is training with Exeter City. The Grecians have no ready made replacement should Peter Fox get injured or suspended, with only the inexperienced trainee keeper Paul Barnes on the books. Paul is named as City's substitute keeper again for the visit of Walsall. City boss Alan Ball says he will speak to the board of directors about the possibility of signing Gosney on a short term basis, and admits that it would be little unfair on Barnes to put him in the first team should the need arise.

With extra time looming Ronnie Jepson scores his second of the match too give Exeter City a 2-1 win over Walsall at St. James Park in the first round second leg Coca Cola Cup tie. This gives the City a 2-1 win on aggregate and the possibility of a money spin- ning second round draw. The attendance of just over 2,000 gives cause for concern, following on from the disappointing crowd in the opening league fixture against York City. Rod McDonald had put Walsall in front, but Jepson equalises from the penal- ty spot in the 45th minute, after a shot was handled on the line by Chris Marsh, who is sent off. After the interval it is almost a case of incessant pressure on the ten man Walsall side as City search out the winner. Jepson finally obliges after a great right wing run and cross from Stuart Storer.

Exeter City: Fox, White, Robinson, Bailey, Daniels, Whiston, Storer, Coughlin, Jepson, Ross, Taylor (Phillips).

Walsall: Gayle, Evans, Marsh, Watkiss, Ryder, Smith, Ntamark, Tinkler, Cecere (Wright), Reece, McDonald.

  • Earlier in the afternoon, the City reserve team lose 3-2 to AFC Bournemouth in a Neville Ovenden Football Combination Division Two Cup fixture. Richard Pears and Toby Redwood are the marksmen.
