Match Report

Ronnie Jepson was on target again for Exeter City as the Grecians chalked up their first Second Division victory of the season. Visitors Hartlepool United, not for the first time this season, cashed in on early mistake in the City defence to take a fifth minute lead through Nicky Southall. Apart from a magnificent second half save again from Southall, City keeper Peter Fox had a relatively quiet afternoon as the Grecians virtually camped in the Hartlepool half.

Exeter equalised two minutes before the break when a Russell Coughlin free kick found its way through the visitors defensive wall, and the ball ran free for Gary Worthington to net his first goal for the club from just twelve yards. With time fast running out in the second half, City finally grabbed the deserved winning goal from that man Jepson again. An 88th minute free kick, once more taken by Coughlin, took a deflection and the big City striker was on the spot to head home into the bottom corner of the net.

City striker Gary Worthington was honest enough at the end of the game to explain: "We could hardly claim that we had worked on either free kick move in training. But we don't care how they go in, as long as we win." The attendance for the game was 2,644.

Exeter City: Peter Fox, Chris White (Dave Cooper), Ronnie Robinson, Danny Bailey, Scott Daniels, Peter Whiston, Stuart Storer, Russell Coughlin, Ronnie Jepson, Gary Worthington (Jason Percival), Steve Wigley.

Hartlepool United: Carter, Ryan R., Ryan P., McGuckin, McPhail, Emerson, Thompson, Wratten, West (Peverell), Honour, Southall.

  • The Exeter City 'A' team were involved in a nine goal match at Clyst Valley in the Devon and Exeter Premier League. Toby Redwood netted a hat-trick, and Anthony Thirlby scored twice, as the City just edged home 5-4 to maintain their 100 per cent record.
