A disastrous first half at York City, as the Grecians go down 3-0 in the Endsleigh League Second Division. It all went wrong as early as the twelfth minute when Peter Whiston was adjudged to have brought down Paul Barnes, and then apparently rather harshly sent off. Barnes stepped up to tuck away the resultant penalty. From then on it was always going to be an uphill task for the Grecians with a man short.
York City increased their lead two minutes later when former Plymouth Argyle striker Steve Cooper headed home. And the home side were awarded another penalty after a challenge by Stuart Storer sent Cooper tumbling. Barnes once again stepped up to score from the spot.
Exeter gave a good battling display after the interval, but the task was too great to make any impression. Indeed goalkeeper Peter Fox was called upon to make a couple of good saves, and only the woodwork denied York another goal when Andy McMillan crashed a 25 yarder against the crossbar.
Loan signing Gavin Worboys worked hard up front with little support, whilst the mid- field was again denied the presence of Russell Coughlin out with a ham- string strain.
York City: Kiely, McMillan, Hall, Swann, Tutill, Stancliffe, McCarthy, Cooper, Barnes, Bushell, Canham.
Exeter City: Peter Fox, Chris White (Ronnie Robinson), Jon Brown, Danny Bailey, Scott Daniels, Peter Whiston, Stuart Storer, Jason Minett, Gavin Worboys, Gary Worthington, Steve Wigley.
- The one bright spot of the day was the continuing form of the City under 18 team who travelled to Swansea City and won 4-1. This completed a double over the Swans, having beaten them on the opening day of the season at the Cat and Fiddle by 4-2. The Grecians goalscorers this time however were Richard Pears and Matthew Harris who were each twice on target.
