A 59th minute penalty taken successfully by Mickey Ross give Exeter City a hard fought win over promotion chasing Bristol Rovers at St James Park. The penalty was awarded after Mark Cooper was sent tumbling in the Rovers area. Although not the best game in the world to watch, the points nevertheless prove to be extremely important in the Grecians attempt at climbing away from the relegation area. The win is the first at St James Park since 2nd November.

Mark Gavin and Nicky Morgan both had first half efforts cleared off the Rovers, goal-line, and whilst the visi- tors created a few chances for themselves, they rarely tested City keeper Peter Fox to any degree. Robbie Turner is a tower of strength in the City defence giving an outstanding display. The match is watched by an attendance of 3,943.

EXETER CITY: Peter Fox, David Llewellyn, Toby Redwood, Mark Cooper, Jon Brown, Mickey Ross, Steve Wigley, Russell Coughlin, Robbie Turner, Nicky Morgan, Mark Gavin.

BRISTOL ROVERS: Parkin, Pritchard, Maddison, Channing, Clark, Wright, Sterling, Taylor, Stewart, Skinner (Davis), Archer (McLean).

Trainee midfielder Jimmy Ball leaves Exeter City after asking for his contract to be terminated. City manager Terry Cooper agreed to the players release and said that there had been no hard feel- ings, the move being made in everybody's interest. Ball had been captain this sea- son of City's South West Counties Youth League team.

Exeter City Commercial Manager Steve Birley offi- cially launches an exciting new fundraising venture at the Bristol Rovers game. Starball, based on the Spot The Ball concept, offers a potential weekly prize of £5,000. "Lots of other clubs are catching on to the com- petition, but we at Exeter City are the first to get it up and running." adds Birley.
