After holding Port vale to a goalless scoreline at the interval, the Grecians even- tually lost 3-0 at Vale Park, and were thus relegated to the Third Division. Vale scor- ers were Martin Foyle (2), and Kevin kent. City manager Terry Cooper commented; "I knew we were going down from the moment I took over at Exeter in February, and the fans, God bless them, knew it as well. But it is not all gloom and doom, there is light at the end of the tunnel."
