WEDNESDAY 23rd AUGUST 1995.
COCA COLA CUP
1st ROUND, 2nd LEG.
EXETER CITY 1
TORQUAY UNITED 1
The Grecians made their exit from this season's Coca Cola Cup, but not before the tie went into extra-time, with Torquay eventually going through to the next round on the away goals rule. It was certainly an eventful match to watch, full of incident, and with two players receiving their marching orders, City's Mark Came went for an alleged rash challenge on Torquay keeper Ashley Bayes which left him with a facial injury and United's lan Hathaway for an off the ball incident in the first half.
Exeter attacked from the kick off and for the opening 20 minutes were well on top. They took the lead through Jon Richardson who headed home powerfully following a short corner. Within a minute however, Torquay were level Mark Hawthome sicefooted the ball into net after the ball had been parried to him by Peter Fox who had partially stopped the innal shot.
City never quite recaptured their attacking flair after that, but they did almost prevent the tie from going into extra-time when with six minutes remaining Robbie Turner's shot rebounded off the Torquay crossbar to safety.
With an away goal, Torquay knew that they were through to the next
round providing they didn't concede another goal. Exeter pushed forward more and more but were unable to find the vital breakthrough. United substitute Jamie Ndah gave the City defence a new problem to combat, but he never got the better of yet another solid defensive performance from messrs. Fox, Parsley, Rice, Blake and Richardson.
It was a disappointing way to go out of the Coca Cola Cup, but this was certainly, as far as attacking options were concerned, the best performance by City so far this season.
