Match 05
26th August 1995
Scarborough (h)
SATURDAY 25th AUGUST 1995.
THIRD DIVISION.
EXETER CITY 2 SCARBOROUGH 0.
At last Exeter City had won a home match! Their last success at the Park in the League had been against Scarborough the previous November. The three points were a welcome boost for manager Peter Fox-the first win of his fledgling managerial career and for the long suffering but loyal City Supporters. The goalscoring hern of the afternoon was detender Mark Came, who netted both the goals, the first 'double of his career. Sent off in the previous match, Came bounced back in fine fashion with his two goals and all round display
There was no real clue as to what would happen as the players trooped off for the half time break for quite frankly the opening 45 minutes were poor. There was not a let to enthuse about from either side, but after the interval City looked a far more competent outfit. They got away to best possible start in the 47th minute when Mark Came swept home a close range shot following a corner taken by Russell Coughlin which had been knocked back acress goal by Richard Pears Goal number two was the result of another corner, this lime being headed back to Came by Mark Cooper. Came planted a firm header into the Scarborough net.
There could have been more goals. Pears raced away latching cn to a poor back pass but his shot was blocked by Scarborough keeper Gavin Kelly. Came almost grabbed a hat-trick when he glanced a header a foot wide of the right hand pest following a cross from Neil Parsley Exeter played some excellent football using the wings to good effect, particularly down the night where Mark Chamberlain and Neil Parsley were constantly involved.
The victory should have greatly restored confidence in the City team, who by the end of the aftemcon found themselves abuve beth Torquay United and Plymouth Argyle in the Third Division league table. The victory was even more commendable when one considers that City played without their recognised strike force, Mike Cecere being injured and Robbie Turner suspended.
