Match 34
13th February 1996
Mansfield T (h)
Tuesday 13th February 1996
Third Division
EXETER CITY 2 MANSFIELD TOWN 2
The St James Park playing surface had recovered from the rains of the previous few days, for this re-arranged fixture against Mansfield Town, which produced four goals
Despite the goals, however, the game overall was a poor one, and on that City were destined to lose until the introduction of substitute Mark Chamberlain
Exeter made a good start, scoring after just four minutes, when some slack defending from a corner, allowed Lee Bradbury to pounce on the loose ball to fire home. After that though, Mansfield began to look increasingly dangerous as they began to dominate the play and it was no surprise when they equalised in the 35th minute, with Warren Hackett nodding home almost on the City goal line.
Worse was to follow as Iffy Onura hit an angled shot from the corner of the penalty area that went in under a diving Peter Fox, which he would admit should have been saved, even though he was partially unsighted.
Exeter came back into the game after the break, but as in so many games this season, lacked the cutting edge. They introduced Chamberlain as substitute in the 70th minute and within 60 seconds he headed goalwards only for Adey Boothroyd to clear the ball off the line, but unfortunately for him, against Hackett and it rebounded into the net.
